Buddy & Lisa — back to Seattle! In the first full-length Buddy story in ten years (and it's a doozy), just when things are starting to look idyllic for our heroes, a family crisis forces Lisa to re-unite with her Seattle-based parents and brings Buddy and their young son Harold along with her — and Buddy quickly learns why she's been avoiding them for 20-odd years! And Lisa has some other unwelcome surprises in her family tree as well...
Plus, Pete gets political in cartoons from El Rios, High Times and Seattle Weekly. And a couple of ads!
Review by PD Houston:
How does Peter Bagge stay so good after all these years? Hate Annual #9 was as good as any of the previes issues of Hate (possibly better?). I guess that's why he's one of the all time greats. He just stays good year after year, issue after issue. This latest offering involving Buddy and his wife Lisa and son Harold visiting Lisa's parents in Seattle was hilarious, awkward and sublime! It's a hell of an issue and I want to see what happens next, but I'm worried it could be a long time before we see another issue from Mr. Bagge.
What happens in this issue is that Buddy has abandoned his pop culture collecting days for collecting scrap metal and living a rather comfortable life compared to what we've seen before from Buddy. But when the whole family goes to visit Lisa's parents in Seattle, things start to get weird for Buddy again. From cheese waffles, pot peanut butter, child molestors, religion and drug addicts, it's just all a part of the wacky world of Buddy Bradley.
It seems kinda weird seeing Buddy in a rather adjusted life even if things around him are getting crazy again. Even stranger, Buddy's a cool dad! Letting his son eat crazy bachelor food and playing in junkyards. Right on Buddy! While being a huge fan of Bagge and particularly of Hate, I would love to see more about Buddy on a regular basis, but I will take what I get when I get it if it's of this quality. Thank you Peter Bagge for continuing to be this awesome!
