Glamazonia the Uncanny Super-Tranny is busting heads and breaking hearts! Watch as our heroine gains her powers from the bite of a radioactive drag queen, has a three-way with Fidel and Che, and tussles with that witch, Power Princess. Comics have never been so fabulous!
Review by PD Houston:
Thanks to Northwest Press for sending me a copy of this to review, much appreciated.
The book started out a little slowly for me, but by page 10 I was hooked. This book is super funny and super ridiculous with a harsh sardonic wit. Glamazonia is the greatest super-hero-ine in the world, but she's also a complete drunk, slut, bitch and bad ass. This 136 page graphic novel is filled with over a dozen short and long stories featuring the hilarious writing talents of Justin Hall and illustrated by a bunch of good to great artists.
I really enjoyed this book. Justin Hall's ability to crack one wicked joke after another completely won me over. Even when some of the art was not quite up to par, Hall's ability to hold the story together and deliver a punchline was extraordinary. Justin Hall has talent. You don't have to like or even "get" superheroes to enjoy this book, the premise is just a base for Hall to express his wicked funny bone and maybe bring in some normal comic book readers to a twist on a genre they may have never seen before. Despite all the knocks on superhero comics, they are an easy subject matter to understand which means almost anybody could pick this book up and get into it.
My favorite story of the book was probably "J.F. Killer" written and drawn by Justin Hall. It's set-up is that Glamazonia is suspected of killing John F. Kennedy. Jimmy Olsen stand-in Johnny Wholesome interviews our uncanny tranny hero about a picture he has showing a grassy knoll and the wig of Glamazonia. On the story goes and we find out Glamazonia has slept with JFK, Che Guevera, Castro & others during her time in the 60's. A battle with super tramp Power Princess and the death of Marilyn Monroe brings the story home, but this story had me chuckling the whole time.
This is possibly the best humor comic I've read in a long time and if you like fun ridiculous comics with hard hitting humor then get this book. You will not be dissapointed.
And for some added fun here's some of my favorite quotes from the book as a sample of the hilarity found within...
JFK talking to an aide while watching Glamazonia perform a song and dance routine...
"She's a superhero? I've never had one of them..."
Aide: "And she's a tranny."
"Even better. I've got to have her."
The head of the Havana Mob giving orders to Glamazonia who is apparently doing work for them to take out Fidel Castro and Che Guevara...
Glamazonia: "Oh my gawd! They're so hot!"
Boss: "What?!"
"I'm tired of your unprofessionalism! This is the last time you refuse a hit because you think he's hot!"
Glamazonia talks about the fashion fails of some new gay heroes...
"A little flamboyance is fine, but as a general rule if you can't fit into a bathroom stall to do a line or suck a dick you've gone too far."
Glamazonia puts the stops to some lame-o super villians attempting to entrance people with a new experiment...
"I'll deal with you right after I destroy that super crack with my glamah vision..."
